Back in June 2004, there was a news article from Williams Lake, BC, Canada that reported an unusual number of dead crows discovered in the area. "Crows have been dropping out of the sky", said Conservation Officer Andrew Anaka." The crows had foam coming from their mouths. We're pretty concerned."
The story went on to say that crows are an indicator species for West Nile virus and that the carcasses of some twenty birds were sent to the BC Ministry of Agriculture for testing to determine the cause of death.
Having previously heard that dead birds were being found in industrial regions in the US, I later contacted the officer to find out the results of the toxicology tests. His email reply: "The crows were confirmed to NOT have West Nile virus. The cause of death was undetermined, but was suspected to be unintentional poisoning by pesticides.
That was the last I heard of the report or the fact that pesticides could be the cause of birds dying. It begs the question as to how many other birds, as well as other species of animals, are actually dying from man-made toxins but written off as having contracted a "viral infection."
